Fresh flowers are gorgeous. You can't beat the smells, textures, and colors of beautiful blooms. Sure we'd love to have them in our homes all the time, but lets face it, they can be expensive and of course they only last so long. I've worked with Afloral on a few projects before, like this colorful table setting I styled, and wedding arch, and if you want to be surrounded by flowers all the time faux should be considered as a great alternative. Today I'm going to show you how to create a beautiful modern moody floral arrangement using faux blooms.
For this arrangement I wanted to combine soft, fluffy textures with some dark striking blooms, and interesting elements in hues of plum, and burgundy. In addition to the faux flowers you'll need:
- Chicken wire
- Wire Cutters
- A medium size urn, or modern vase.
To start ball up your chicken wire and put it in your vase. The mesh of the wire acts like a stabilizer for your blooms and will allow you to get a beautiful, organic style arrangement. And of course since we're working with faux flowers you don't need water. Bonus!
First start with your foliage. I used plum colored coleus and one of my go to fresh greenery choices seeded eucalyptus (but here in faux). Make a nest of your greenery, this is the base of your arrangement. Don't be afraid to really branch out your pieces and make them flow from the vase.
Next we'll add our medium filler flowers, the garden roses, ranunculus, and dahlias. This is where the design really begins to take shape. Make sure to balance your arrangement, and turn your vase as you work so all sides look gorgeous.
Next we'll add some of our larger "statement" blooms, these huge, beautiful peonies. These help fill in the arrangement and also allow you go give these blooms a place of prominence in your design where they can stand out.
The last step (and maybe the most fun in my opinion) is to add the textural elements. For this arrangement I decided to use some fun elements like cotton, magnolia branches, raspberries, and scabiosa pods. These last elements really fill in the design and give it those final details that make it look finished and polished.
I added the black background, I thought it really made the colors pop, and gave the whole design that extra moody touch I was looking for.
And that's it, you've got a gorgeous modern moody floral arrangement for your home, and even better, it will never wilt! I hope you'll give faux flowers a chance, they really are so fun to play with, and since they're not perishable and very hardy there's no pressure when you design.
